My Story
I write about the places we belong to and the places that belong to us. What the natural world holds, what we carry, and what remains after something — or someone — is gone. I’m drawn to layers, connections that aren’t obvious at first, the things we say, the things we don’t, and what lies between. Sometimes it becomes an essay. Sometimes a poem. Sometimes something longer. Away from the page, I live in the mountains of Western North Carolina. I’ve been a lawyer and now lead a Chamber of Commerce. Neither has done much to cure me of asking questions. Quite the opposite.
Education:
Apparently, I’ve always preferred the long way around, with a particular fondness for the backroads. I started school in St. Petersburg, Florida, then made my way up to Raleigh and an all-girls boarding school, where I finished high school and earned an associate degree at what was then St. Mary’s College. From there, it was over to UNC–Chapel Hill to study public policy analysis, and eventually back around to Florida for law school.
Elsewhere
I’m happiest with my hands in the dirt or my boots in the woods, where my mind is free to wander.
